Coping with a Family Member’s Mental Illness by Drema Drudge

Pleased to help out on this terrific piece by Drema Drudge about dealing with a family member’s mental illness.

“Living with mental illness is chaotic and uncomfortable, not just for the sufferer, but for the people around them,” said Alicia H. Clark PsyD, PLLC. “Be honest, and lean on supportive friends and family to help.” Pamela says, “I had to learn that her problems are her problems and not a reflection of our parent- ing. I had to learn that even though she is angry with me and treating me like scum, it doesn’t mean I have something to apologize for nor am I an awful person.”

Clark especially recommends education. “The trick is to recognize and understand the mental illness with which your loved one is dealing. Learn what you’re dealing with and how to respond to your loved one’s illness in ways that maximize your health and theirs.” Contact National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) https://www.nami.org for more information.
